On Monday, January 8, 2018, The Salvation Army Toronto Housing and Homeless Supports officially opened New Hope Leslieville, a 60-bed facility for men in the community of Leslieville. This facility will provide emergency shelter, meals, supportive counselling, housing placement, follow-up services, employment referrals and rehabilitation support for men experiencing homelessness.
After 40 years of dedicated service to men facing homelessness in Toronto, The Salvation Army Hope Shelter on 167 College Street closed its doors in April 2015, as the building’s lease concluded. Working in close partnership with the City of Toronto, The Salvation Army secured a new location at 29 Leslie Street for the replacement shelter which is aptly named New Hope Leslieville. This new facility will be able to accommodate approximately 20 clients initially and up to 60 clients when at full capacity.
“I would like to welcome the New Hope Shelter to wonderful Ward 32! This is our first shelter in our ward and we are doing everything we can to support The Salvation Army with this new home,” says Councillor Mary-Margaret McMahon, Ward 32. “Our local working group has been meeting for months to collaborate on ideas to connect everyone to our community. The opening of our shelter is especially timely given the recent temperatures and we hope to be able to provide warm beds and services for those in need.”
“The Salvation Army has a critical role to play in the movement to end homelessness,” says Bradley Harris, Executive Director of The Salvation Army Toronto Housing and Homeless Supports. “Continuing with the opening of New Hope Leslieville, The Salvation Army Toronto Housing and Homeless Supports provides shelter services that align with Housing First through its strategic vision of Housing, Outcomes, Mission and Excellence (HOME). Our focus is on serving clients sustainably and excellently as we develop and track meaningful program outcomes.”
“Homelessness continues to be an increasing issue in the City of Toronto,” says Major John P. Murray, spokesperson for The Salvation Army. “The Salvation Army’s goal is not to only provide shelter to those experiencing homelessness, but to offer services and resources that help individuals break the cycle of poverty.”
